Operating System for Android

Android Operating System

What does Android Operating System mean by definition?

The Open Handset Alliance created the Linux-based Android Operating System (OHA). In the fourth quarter of 2010, Android OS shipments surpassed those of Symbian, knocking the latter off the top rank among smartphone operating systems.

Android Operating System is described on Techopedia.

The company that initially developed the Android OS, Android, Inc., was acquired by Google in 2005. The Open Handset Alliance (OHA), which was founded by Google in collaboration with other businesses, is now in charge of overseeing the ongoing development of the Android operating system.

The Android version is always given a dessert-related moniker by the OHA. Cupcake refers to Android 1.5, Donut to Android 1.6, Eclair to Android 2.0/2.1, Froyo to Android 2.2, and Gingerbread to Android 2.3. The source code of a version is also released.

Although the kernel that powers Android is based on Linux, Google has made modifications to it. It lacks a native X Windows system and does not support the GNU libraries. Drivers for the display, camera, flash memory, keypad, WiFi, and audio can be found inside the Linux kernel. Between the phone's hardware and the remaining software, the Linux kernel acts as an abstraction. Core system functions including security, memory management, process management, and the network stack are also taken care of by it.

The Android OS is created for mobile devices. Among its many attributes are:
WebKit-based integrated browser with enhanced 2D and 3D graphics, multimedia, and GSM connectivity
  • Bluetooth,
  • EDGE,
  • 3G,
  • WiFi,
  • SQLite,
  • Camera,
  •  GPS,
  • Compass, Accelerator
The Android Software Development Kit (SDK) for a particular version is available for download for programmers who want to create applications for the Android OS. A debugger, libraries, an emulator, some documentation, sample code, and tutorials are all included in the SDK. Interested parties can write Java applications using graphical integrated development environments (IDEs), such as Eclipse, for quicker development.

Smartphones with Android OS took first place for most shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010. The Motorola Atrix 4G, Samsung Nexus S, and HTC Evo Shift 4G are just a few examples of smartphones from various manufacturers that run the Android operating system. Now, a few additional mobile operating systems (OSs) are built on Android, including Tapas and Open Mobile System (OMS).
