Om Puri, a veteran Indian actor who starred in the British smash East is East, passed away at the age of 66.

According to reports, the actor had a heart attack early on Friday at his home in Mumbai.
Om Puri was well-known for his gritty performances in several important Indian films in the 1980s. He appeared in both popular and art cinema.

Additionally, he had cameo appearances in several British movies, notably Richard Attenborough's biopic of Mahatma Gandhi.

Puri, a talented performer, was well-known for his parts in Hollywood, British, Pakistani, and Indian movies. For his service to the British cinema business, he received an honorary OBE in 2004.

In the 1976 movie Ghashiram Kotwal, Puri, who was born in the northern Indian state of Haryana in 1950, made his acting debut.
In the 1980s, he rose to prominence in the Indian cinema business before going on to achieve renown abroad in the 1990s.

The 1999 British comedy East is East, which follows a Pakistani immigrant adjusting to life in the north of England, was one of his parts in both American and British movies.

Additionally, Puri acted alongside Dame Helen Mirren in the City of Joy, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Charlie Wilson's War, and most recently, The Hundred-Foot Journey.

For his roles in highly praised movies like Ardh Satya, Sadgati, Paar, and the satirical Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Puri was best recognized at home.

According to the BBC's Soutik Biswas, Puri was one of India's most successful crossover performers, appearing in movies alongside celebrities like Jack Nicholson and Tom Hanks.

His portrayals of a policeman in Ardh Satya who is beaten back by the system and a tribal guy who is wrongfully accused of murder in Govind Nihalani's Aakrosh continue to rank among the best on Indian television, according to Biswas.

In addition to their son Ishaan, Puri is survived by his wife Nandita Puri, whom he wed in 1993.

Newspapers in the neighboring nation of Pakistan have heavily featured the actor's passing.
Following tensions over Kashmir, he has lately spoken out against India's prohibition on Pakistani actors appearing in Bollywood movies.
He informed an Indian TV station that Pakistani musicians were not terrorists. A portion of the Indian media criticized the comment.

The actor also said other things that sparked debate around the nation.
These included remarks on the Indian army, politicians who "plunder" the nation, and a remark made about the contentious lynching of a Muslim man in 2015 over beef, in which he said that those who want to outlaw cow slaughtering in the nation were hypocrites.

Ananth Mahadevan, an actor, and director who was close to Puri paid respect to the celebrity.
"It's a personal loss and a loss to the cinema because he was truly India's international star," he said on the BBC World Service's Newsday program.

Puri was a man who demonstrated that you don't need to be a particularly handsome-looking, tall, strapping guy to be a leading man, Mahadevan said, praising his "sheer adaptability." Om demonstrated that you required a tone of talent with his insight and compassion.

The actor expressed his thoughts on his life and profession in a tweet two weeks ago, noting that he did not have a "conventional face" but was "proud" of his accomplishments.
